Pervez Musharraf, former Pakistani president, dies
Pervez Musharraf, who served as Pakistan’s president from 2001 to 2008, fled his country and lived in Dubai in recent years, has been announced to have passed away.
Pakistani media reported that Musharraf, 79, had been battling illness for some time as he died in a Dubai hospital. Musharraf, who won the support of the international public with his reformist decisions after taking office, was seen as one of the most important allies of the US.
The experts also pointed out that the Kashmir issue, which is a never-ending crisis between India and Pakistan, was close to being resolved during Musharraf’s period, but peace talks did not advance after Musharraf’s period.
Musharraf, who wanted to run in Pakistan’s 2013 election but was disqualified, was charged with treason for declaring an unconstitutional state of emergency in 2007 and for arresting members of the judiciary. Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, assassinated in 2007, was accused of failing to take necessary precautions despite receiving intelligence that the Taliban would kill him.
