Church orders million-dollar compensation to victims of sexual abuse

It has been reported that more than 40 million euros will be paid to those who reported sexual abuse and harassment in the Catholic Church in Germany in the last two years.

Making a statement in Bonn, the Independent Recognition Services Commission (UKA) stated that the Catholic Church was approved to pay compensation of more than 40 million euros to a total of 1,839 people who claimed sexual abuse in churches in recent two years.

It was announced that the amount to be received by the victims was set at 22,150 euros per person. In the report published by the UKA, it was noted that three quarters of the victims of abuse by Catholic priests were children.

Most of those who were sexually abused and abused in churches as children applied from the cities of Cologne and Münster. While most of the applications in 2021 and 2022 were accepted, it was shared that 226 applications in 2023 will be examined in the next period. (AA)
