The EU has long sought ways to help Ukraine bring to justice the wrongdoings committed there following the Russian invasion. For example, EU countries have sent forensic experts and shared knowledge and facilities. Brussels is also calling for support for a special “aggression tribunal” to prosecute those responsible for the invasion.
The new center will work closely with the existing EU agency Eurojust, based in The Hague, and with the joint investigation team comprising Ukraine and six other countries. The committee announced the plan earlier and received backing from EU member states in recent days.
