Most Finns want to join NATO alone

After Russia’s attack on Ukraine, remarkable results emerged from the poll conducted in Finland, which wanted to become a NATO member along with Sweden.

In the poll shared after President Erdogan’s statement that Finland is interested in joining NATO, more than half of Finns responded negatively to the question “Should Finland wait for Sweden, which Turkey will prevent from joining? ” While 53 percent of people responded negatively to this, 28 percent of those surveyed said they should wait for Sweden.

1021 Finns took part in the survey published in the Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat, and the survey was recorded to have taken place between January 30 and February 1. The Finnish government, for its part, announced in earlier statements that it would prefer to join NATO along with Sweden. Making a statement on Monday, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said: “Our wish as Finland is to join NATO together with Sweden. “Sweden is our closest ally, both in defense and diplomacy,” he said.
