Financial and military support on the agenda of the EU-Ukraine Summit
At the summit on February 3, the European Union (EU) and the Ukrainian administration will discuss many issues, such as Ukraine’s EU membership process, EU support for Ukraine in its war against Russia and the possible peace process.
European Council President Charles Michel, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and most members of the EU Commission will travel to Ukraine on Friday to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and members of the government. Detailed information about the meeting place and time is not shared for security reasons.
The press conference, which Michel, von der Leyen and Zelenskiy are expected to attend at the end of the summit, will not be broadcast live for the same reason.
The final communiqué will be published at the end of the EU-Ukraine Summit, which will be held for the first time after the start of the war with the Russian attack on February 24, 2022.
EU MEMBERSHIP OF UKRAINE IS ON THE AGENDA
The summit will consist of two sessions. In the first of the sessions, Ukraine’s candidacy, membership and EU integration processes will be discussed. Ukraine, which was granted “EU candidate” status on June 23, 2022, 4 months after the start of the war, is not expected to become a member any time soon.
In the other session, the EU’s support for Ukraine, which is facing off against Russia, will be discussed. In this context, the possible new sanctions package after the 9 EU sanctions package and kyiv’s demands in this framework will be discussed.
EU military, financial, humanitarian and economic aid will also be on the agenda. It is claimed that direct and indirect aid from the EU so far has reached 60,000 million euros. Apart from this, the issue of the use of the assets of 300 billion euros belonging to the Central Bank of Russia, which was frozen by the EU and the G7 countries, in the reconstruction of Ukraine will also be evaluated.
The number of Ukrainian soldiers the EU plans to train will be increased from 15,000 to 30,000. Details will be shared at the end of the summit. The training of 30,000 soldiers is scheduled to be completed within this year. (AA)
