Iran move drawing EU attention: Will be added to terrorist list
A notable move comes from the European Union regarding the Revolutionary Guard within the army, which combats threats against Iran’s Islamic regime and carries military, political and economic weight in the country.
Speaking to the Financial Times, one of Britain’s most respected newspapers, diplomats and officials announced that the European Union is discussing options to put Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on the terrorist list. The EU, which has made no move in the past to prevent Iran from increasing its nuclear weapons capability, will have made a major policy shift if it puts the Revolutionary Guard on the terrorist list.
While France and Germany, sitting around the Iran nuclear deal table, were said to have supported this idea, he said EU officials would send a draft decision text to 27 countries within three weeks. The EU High Representative for Foreign Relations and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said: “Yes, some member states support this proposal. Many of them decide in that direction, ”he said. It is highly unusual for governments to designate military groups affiliated with another country’s military as terrorists.
While the UK is expected to take a similar step, the Trump administration added Iran’s Revolutionary Guards to its terrorist list in 2019. The Revolutionary Guard, made up of 120,000 soldiers, was established after the 1979 revolution to fight and protect the country from internal and external threats.
