Labor riots on public holidays in Denmark
Lizette Risgaard, president of the Danish Trade Union Confederation, stated at a press conference that the plan to abolish the national holiday is a clear attack on the Danish example.
Approximately 500,000 people signed the campaign launched by the confederation, which has 1.3 million members, to prevent the implementation of the plan.
Meanwhile, associations representing military personnel and churches have also come out against the plan.
“IT WILL NOT BE A PROBLEM”
On the other hand, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, in her speech to parliament, said she did not think working an extra day was a problem.
Frederiksen affirmed that the expenses in defense and security, health services, psychiatry and green transition are quite high.
It is noteworthy that the issue of defense has come to the fore in the country, especially with the start of the Ukraine-Russia War.
The coalition government made up of the Social Democratic Party, the Liberal Party and the Moderate Party decided on December 15, 2022 to cancel one of the 11 public holidays in order to increase defense spending.
The “Day of the Great Prayer”, which was declared a public holiday in 1686 after that decision, is expected to cease to be a public holiday. (AA)
