Critical meeting with Iran on the attack on the embassy of Azerbaijan

According to the written statement of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Abdullahiyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Ceyhun Bayramov spoke on the phone about the attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran.

During the meeting, Abdullahiyan condemned the attack in which an embassy official was killed and two other officials were injured, and expressed sadness and condolences to the family of the deceased and his Azerbaijani counterpart.

Noting that the incident “could be abused by the enemies of the two countries”, Abdullahiyan stated that “the attack must not be allowed to negatively affect relations between Iran and Azerbaijan.”

Abdullahiyan suggested that the security institutions of the two countries investigate the issue in close cooperation to shed light on the various dimensions of the attack.

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Bayramov welcomed his Iranian counterpart’s proposal for cooperation and coordination between the judicial and security institutions of the two countries to clarify the dimensions of the incident.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The embassy security chief was reported killed and two security guards injured in the armed attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran this morning.

Tehran Police Chief Hussein Rahimi announced that the attacker was captured after the incident and that the attack was carried out “due to personal and family problems,” according to preliminary investigations. The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry also condemned the attack and announced that the Tehran Embassy would be evacuated.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, on his Twitter account, described the attack as a terrorist act, saying: “We demand that this terrorist act be investigated as soon as possible and that the terrorists be punished. Terrorist attacks on diplomatic missions are unacceptable.” He had used the words.
