New York Times Election Analysis: Erdogan Spends Billions for Victory

The New York Times, one of the leading US dailies, published a remarkable analysis of the electoral environment in Turkey. The newspaper’s correspondent in Turkey, Ben Hubbard, wrote in the article: “President Erdogan is trying to soften the impact of inflation ahead of elections that may reshape the country.”

“BILLIONS OF DOLLARS ARE SPENT”

While the article used the phrase: “A few months before the critical elections, the government is trying to win over President Erdogan and the ruling party by spending billions of dollars in state funds,” it was commented: “Some economists said that this spending was not sustainable and could have potentially harmful consequences.

The New York Times article contained remarkable statements about the upcoming electoral process.

Although a final date for the elections has not yet been determined, it was noted that the government took some measures to reduce the effects of the economic crisis. Among these were the increase in the minimum wage, the increase in the salaries of public officials, credit support for SMEs and the EYT decision.

“IT CAN TRIGGER A MAJOR CRISIS”

Drawing attention to the growth achieved in the first 10 years when Erdogan and the AKP came to power, he said: “The economy has weakened in recent years and both opponents in Turkey and Western officials have accused Erdogan. The six tables joined forces to defeat Erdogan and announced that they would return to the parliamentary system if they took office.

In the article published in the New York Times, “Recent government spending moves are like a continuation of last year. The government had canceled some debts and introduced deposits to prevent the depreciation of the TL. Many economists say these spendings may hurt voters until the election, but then they cause higher inflation and trigger a bigger crisis after the election.
