Finland: Turkey did not give us a date

Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said that they are waiting for Hungary’s approval to join NATO at the end of February, while on the other hand, due to events in Sweden, they were not given a date for the Turkish approval.

According to BNS broadcast news in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, Haavisto met with Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics in Riga. In a statement after the meeting, Haavisto stated that countries other than Turkey and Hungary approved Finland’s NATO membership, saying: “There was no report from Turkey due to the incident in Stockholm. “The recent demonstrations in Stockholm have only prolonged and exacerbated the situation,” he said.

Haavisto stated that Finland and Sweden already actively participate in current NATO initiatives, and both countries ensure the security of their member states together with NATO. Recalling that Finland shares a 1,300-kilometre border with Russia, Haavisto stated that Helsinki’s goal is to secure the NATO border between Finland and Russia.

Haavisto also noted that they expect Hungary’s approval for NATO membership at the end of February. (AA)
