A chunk the size of London breaks off in Antarctica

The British Center for Antarctic Studies (BAS) reported that the 1,550-square-kilometre iceberg broke off on Sunday from the 150-meter-thick Brunt ice shelf located on the Antarctic coast, and stressed that it is the second break in the region in the last two years.

BAS emphasized that they are waiting for the iceberg to break and this is not a result of climate change. The breaking up iceberg was said to be about the size of London and its regions.

BAS Director Professor Dame Jane Francis said: “Our glaciologists and operations teams anticipated this event. Ice cover measurements are made several times a day using an automated network of high-precision GPS instruments that surround the station. These measure how the ice sheet is deforming and moving and are compared with satellite images from ESA, NASA and the German TerraSAR-X satellite. “All the data is sent to Cambridge for analysis, so we know what happens even in the Antarctic winter.”
