Shocking Russian Media Claim: Turkey Stopped Issuing Residence Permits To Russians

One of the countries most affected by the war between Russia and Ukraine, which has been going on for almost a year, was Turkey. Although many Russians left the country due to the sanctions and the partial mobilization decision, thousands of them started a new life in Turkish cities.

Especially in Antalya, which was home to many Russians before the war, the proportion of the Russian population increased rapidly. While Russians flocked to residences in Turkey, foreigners bought one in three residences sold in Antalya. Home sales to foreigners in Turkey in 2022 broke a record with an increase of 15.2 percent compared to the previous year.

As discussions of the Russian influx into Turkey cause house prices to soar, the Russian media made a startling claim.

‘THE REQUESTS OF THE RUSSIANS HAVE BEEN REJECTED’

According to the Moscow Times news, which is based on the Russian-language site Current Time, Turkey recently rejected the residence permit applications of many Russians. In the news, it was claimed that since December 26, applications for short-term residence permits in Russia for tourism purposes have been rejected in some cities.

A woman named Yekaterina, who moved to Fethiye from Moscow with her husband a while ago, said in a statement to the Russian website: “We were told that no matter what documents we bring, Russians are not currently granted a residence permit. “.

According to Russian media, Turkish officials did not comment on the matter.

The Moscow Times reported that 153,000 Russian citizens received temporary residence permits from Turkey last year, and that Russians are the largest population applying for residence permits in Turkey. According to the Turkish authorities, about 86 percent of these people obtained a one-year residence permit in Turkey.

The residence permit also allows foreigners to open a bank account in Turkey and send their children to Turkish schools.
