Earlier this year, Nancy Pelosi did the same, which ultimately caused a stir. According to foreign commentator Bernard Hammelburg, it stands to reason that McCarthy is toying with the idea, because while he can’t determine the reliability of Punchbowl, he knows that McCarthy has already said in his campaign that he wanted to visit Taiwan. “He was yelling in all directions that he was going to go the moment he secured the position,” Hammelburg said. So it seems very reliable to me. The Pentagon is also preparing, so it will take until spring.”

McCarthy isn’t afraid of a hustle like Pelosi, and Hammelburg thinks it makes sense. “He actually joins something that is very much on both sides: the Taiwan issue,” he continues. “He could have gone to Ukraine first, but instead he will go to Taiwan because he indicates – like the other side – that the most important issue in the coming years will probably be the relationship with China. And this is part of it. So it’s just to let people know not to be intimidated by blockades and so on.”

Hammelburg expects the Chinese to react furiously to McCarthy’s plans. “But they are whenever something like this happens, and the United States and the West are somewhat hypocritical about this,” he says. “Because if we really want to support Taiwan, we should simply recognize the country. But nobody does. Neither the United States, nor the Netherlands, nor anyone. Ties were severed as China joined the United Nations and Taiwan was expelled. So everyone acts on principle and says that Taiwan is a free democracy and must be protected, but in the meantime no one dares to take the true path to protect it”.
