Austria: We must destroy nuclear weapons

Schallenberg, in his statement on the second year of the entry into force of the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), stated that there is an understanding that nuclear weapons provide security, and that this is an approach absolutely wrong and that nuclear weapons pose a threat to the entire world.

Stating that the world should be free of nuclear weapons, Schallenberg said: “These weapons will continue to be a threat to everyone as long as they exist. “We must destroy nuclear weapons before they destroy us,” he said.

Noting that threatening with nuclear weapons is very dangerous, Schallenberg shared the view that “this is morally unacceptable, it also limits the range of action of others and clearly goes against international law.”

The Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) was ratified on January 22, 2021, despite opposition from countries with nuclear weapons such as the US, Russia and China.

The United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, China, France, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel, which have nuclear weapons, did not sign the treaty. (AA)
