France has 400 troops in the country to help the junta put down a jihadist uprising that spread from neighboring Mali in 2015. But relations have deteriorated in recent months. The country is governed by military forces led by Captain Ibrahim Traore, who took power in September last year. It was the second coup in eight months.
The French withdrew their military from Mali in 2022 after a coup in 2020 thrust the former colony into Russia’s arms. Even in Burkina Faso, strengthening ties with Moscow has been on the agenda since the last coup.
