High UN delegation discusses restrictions on women with the Taliban

The UN delegation arrived in the capital of Afghanistan, Kabul, the deputy foreign minister of the Taliban interim government, Emirhan Muttaki, the deputy prime minister Abdul Salam Hanefi, the former Afghan president Hamid Karzai, an Afghan politician, one of the important names in the Tajik Society in Afghanistan, and former Chairman of the Supreme Council for National Reconciliation of Afghanistan. He met with Abdullah Abdullah and provincial officials in Kandahar.

In his meetings with Taliban officials, Mohammed demanded the lifting of restrictions on Afghan girls and women to receive education and work in local and foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

The Taliban officials, who wanted the UN to cooperate for the official recognition of their management in the international arena, demanded that humanitarian aid not be associated with political issues and be maintained.

“THE DELEGATION SHARE ITS CONCERNS”

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement to the press: “The delegation shared your concerns and listened to the problems we face. I hope we can overcome these problems together.” he used the phrase.

In his assessment to the BBC of his visit to Afghanistan, UN Assistant Secretary General Mohammed said he believes progress has been made in removing the restrictions and that most of the Taliban officials he met with were open to talk about women’s rights.

Describing the talks as “challenging”, however, Mohammed said it would take a long time for the Taliban administration to take the necessary steps towards international recognition. (AA)
