Baltic states ask Germany to send tanks to Ukraine
11:10 am | Latvia urges Germany, on behalf of the Baltic states, to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. Latvian Foreign Minister Edgards Rinkēvičs tweeted today that the delivery of the tanks is necessary to “stop Russian aggression, help Ukraine and restore peace to Europe”. In doing so, he appeals to Germany’s responsibility as the greatest European power.
The Baltic states border Russia, so they fear Putin will shift attention to the former Soviet states if he can win the war in Ukraine.
The request comes a day after talks between Ukraine’s allies in Ramstein, Germany, in which no decision has yet been made on German tanks. It was decided there that other heavy weapons would be read.
