TWO-SHIFT ELECTION SYSTEM IN TUNISIA
Under the new electoral law announced by President Kays Said in Tunis on September 15, the number of seats in Parliament, previously 217, was reduced to 161, 10 of which were from the diaspora.
With the change in the electoral law, in the 2022 elections, in which the “personal request” method was applied instead of the lists drawn up by political parties, candidates were required to collect signatures from 400 people residing in the region where they would participate in the elections.
According to the new law, which adopts the two-round election system, candidates must receive more than half of the votes of the region in which they are competing to be elected deputies in the first round.
If this vote rate is not reached, after the announcement of the final results, a second round is held in which the two candidates with the highest number of votes will compete. (AA)
