The task of forming the government in Bulgaria was given to the socialists.

As the political crisis continued in Bulgaria, President Rumen Radev entrusted the formation of the government to the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP). At the ceremony held at the Presidency, Radev handed the task of forming a government to the BSP president, which has 24 seats in the 240-member parliament, Korneliya Ninova, saying: “I think the BSP is the party that has the opportunity higher in this attempt”.

In her speech at the ceremony, Ninova said: “Our party, aware of the critical situation in our country, has shown many times that it bears a responsibility and is in favor of dialogue.”

If the BSP fails to form a government, President Radev will dissolve parliament and set a date for new early general elections in the country. Before the BSP, which ranks fifth in the Bulgarian Parliament, consisting of 7 parties, the Bulgarian Citizens for European Development Party (GERB) and the Continuing Change Party (PP), headed by one of the former prime ministers ministers, Boyko Borisov, could not form a government.

GOVERNMENT EFFORTS FAILED

After the ordinary general elections held in April 2021 in Bulgaria, the country held three early general elections after a coalition government could not be formed. In the last 4 parliaments, different parties tried to form a government 11 times in total and failed.

If the BSP’s attempt to form a cabinet fails, Bulgaria is expected to hold early general elections again in March.

Continuing the political tradition of the former communist party in parliament and consistently opposing arms shipments to Ukraine during the war, the pro-Russian BSP’s chances of forming a government are considered “low” by the other 6 parties. (AA)
