Erasmus tension between Hungary and the EU

In his statement to the Magyar Nemzet newspaper, Minister Navracsics said that the concerns expressed in previous meetings with the EU Commission were resolved and therefore they did not understand the EU Commission’s decision.

Stating that with the EU Commission decision, foundation university students will not be able to benefit from Erasmus programmes, but other university students will still have this right, Navracsics said: “This step by the EU Commission is discriminatory.”

Noting that the EU Commission demanded that “purchases from foundations working for the public benefit be included in the scope of public procurement” and “the establishment of a strict conflict of interest system,” Navracsics said that both demands they were complied with by the Hungarian government, so they did not understand the decision made.

Navracsics also added that he will write a letter to EU Budget and Management Committee Member Johannes Hahn and EU Committee on Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Member Mariya Gabriel to resolve the issue. .

According to Özgür Avrupa news, the EU Commission stated that the decision was made because the Hungarian government made regulations regarding foundations, but still allowed active politicians to sit on the board of trustees of foundation universities.

It was also noted in the news that if the arrangement is not made before the end of March, the foundation’s university students and professors will not be able to benefit from EU programs next year. (AA)
