Jeff Bezos’s critically acclaimed megayacht has been named
Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is back on the agenda with his 500 million dollar mega yacht. Bezos, who last year placed an order with a company in the Netherlands, raised his feet and became the target of harsh criticism when a historic bridge was to be demolished so that his yacht could leave the country. The new name for Bezos’s controversial 127-meter Oceanco Y721 yacht has also emerged.
The famous businessman named his mega yacht ‘Protect’, which means ‘new beginnings’ in Maori.
The yacht in question will be the world’s longest sailing yacht when delivered to the Amazon founder, surpassing even the current largest ocean liner, Sea Cloud.
The dismantling and rebuilding of the historic Koningshaven Bridge for the mega-yacht came to the fore.
Bezos was criticized last year for having to demolish an iconic Dutch bridge in order for the $500 million ship to reach the open sea. In fact, the Dutch public on social media threatened to attack Bezos’s yacht with an egg, even setting up a Facebook group for those who wanted to organize.
As events escalated, Bezos announced that he would pay the Dutch city of Rotterdam to dismantle and rebuild part of the 95-year-old historic bridge so the ship could pass through.
The yacht, which Bezos named Protect, will be the world’s longest yacht when completed.
However, after public outcry, the ship’s masts were installed to avoid part of the Koningshaven Bridge and the ship was allowed to pass before the bridge collapsed.
The mega yacht first landed on the water in August. Its triple masts make it 70 meters tall, making the yacht even taller than the Great Pyramid of Giza.
Preserve’s design is based on another Bezos ship, the Black Pearl. Built in 2018, the Black Pearl is the world’s largest DynaRig sailing yacht with three 70 meter carbon masts.
Koru is currently undergoing sea trials and will be completed and delivered in February. The mega-yacht is said to cost Bezos $25 million a year to maintain.
