It has been decided that the OECD will establish a regional center in Crete
OECD Secretary General Mathias Cormann, who visited Athens, the capital of Greece, met with Greek Prime Minister Kiryakos Mitsotakis.
In the joint press release made after the meeting, it was stated that a memorandum of understanding was signed between the OECD and Greece on the opening of the “OECD Population Center for Crete”.
The Cretan center is expected to deal with issues such as population movements, changes in the demographic structure, migration waves, the effects of the demographic structure on the labor market and produce solutions for problems in these areas.
Mitsotakis stated that Greece is a geography that has received significant immigration over the last century, and argued that Crete, located in the Mediterranean, is an ideal location for a center on the theme of “population” in this sense.
Cornmann, for his part, called attention to the aging of the population in developed countries and pointed out that it is necessary to find solutions to the possible problems that this may cause in the health and pension systems and social services.
Giorgos Prevelakis, Permanent Representative of Greece to the OECD, stated that an international conference will be held in Crete every year within the scope of the new center to be opened, and that the center in Crete will be one of the 20 OECD regional centers. around the world. (AA)
