Country fireplace! The death toll has risen, 3-day mourning has been declared

The death toll in anti-government protests in Peru rose to 47. Prime Minister Alberto Otarola said in a statement that a 3-day night curfew was declared in the southern city of Puno, which has become the center of the protests.

When affirming that this decision was taken at the meeting of the Council of Ministers, Otarola said that “this is for the freedom and security of all.” he used the phrase.

THE DEATH TOLL IS RISING

While 18 people, including a police officer, were killed in anti-government demonstrations, the number of people who have lost their lives in protests since December 11 rose to 47.

It was shared that there were violent clashes between police and protesters and that 73 people were injured.

President Dina Boluarte once again called for dialogue with the protesters and demanded the cessation of the protests.

The Inspectorate of Cargo and Goods Transport by Road announced that 53 roads across the country have been blocked with barricades and therefore the supply chain has come to a standstill.

THE MORNING HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED

On the other hand, the government of the city of Puno announced that a 3-day mourning period was declared in the city of Juliaca for the deaths.

The Attorney General’s Office announced that a full-scale investigation into the events has been launched.

CONGRESSMAN’S HOUSE ON FIRE

Prime Minister Otarola, in his statement yesterday, reacted harshly to the protesters, saying: “Organized attacks against the rule of law and institutions are being carried out.” he said.

During the confrontations, the headquarters of the National Customs Inspection, the Public Ministry and the house of the deputy of the Popular Movement Party, Jorge Flores, were set on fire.

Boluarte’s request for early elections was accepted to be held in April 2024 as a result of the vote in Congress.

Due to the deaths, 2 ministers resigned from their posts on December 17, 2022, and the Ombudsman’s Office asked the prosecution to start an “urgent investigation”.

CONFIRMED THE PUNISHMENT OF CASTILLO

The Supreme Court of Justice of Peru rejected the appeal against the 18-month preventive prison sentence imposed on former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo on December 30, 2022 and decided to continue the sentence.

CASTLE APPOINTMENT

Former President Castillo was removed by Congress on charges of “permanent moral incompetence,” which he accused of overthrowing the government.

The decision to remove Castillo from his position was approved in the plenary session on December 7 with 101 votes in favor, 6 against, and 10 abstentions.

The reason for the dismissal of Castillo in Congress was given as “the usurpation of public functions, hindering the functioning of the powers of the State and trying to violate the constitutional order.”

Pedro Castillo was arrested after his decision to dissolve Congress and form a national emergency government. (AA)
