Iranian leader Khamenei accuses protesters of “treason”
In his speech at the ceremony held in the capital, Tehran, on the occasion of the “Uprising Day of 19 Dey (January 9), the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, made an assessment of the Mahsa Amini demonstrations that have been occurring for about 4 months at intervals
Reiterating the claim that the demonstrations were supported by foreign powers, Khamenei said that Iran’s enemies were unable to achieve their goals with the demonstrations and that the regime maintains its power in the country and in the region. “The external enemies have something to do with the rebellion movement,” Khamenei said. Some say, ‘events are your fault’. This is not true,” he said.
‘THE OBJECTIVE IS TO DESTROY THE STRENGTHS OF THE COUNTRY’
Drawing attention to the statements made by the US and some European countries to support the protesters, Khamenei said: “The most important tool of the enemy in the rebellion movement was the propaganda he made through the mass media. Western, Arab and Hebrew communication and social platforms. Of course, there is no doubt that there is a livelihood and economic problem in the country, but can this problem be solved by burning garbage cans and rioting in the streets? Undoubtedly, these actions are treason and the responsible institutions deal with treason seriously and fairly.
“Some claimed that the rebels were up against the administrative weakness and economic shortcomings of the country,” Khamenei said. Rather, their goal was not to correct weaknesses, but to destroy the country’s strengths, such as security,” he said. Iran’s leader Khamenei noted that the country needs important and transformative work in various fields such as economy, culture, security and science.
The popular uprising that began in the city of Qom on January 9, 1978 against the government of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in Iran is commemorated with different events each year. (AA)
