Pakistan Gets Billions at United Nations Conference Related Articles

At a UN donor conference in Geneva for flood-stricken Pakistan, an amount of €8 billion in aid has already been pledged. Pakistani Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said.

The pledges come from around 40 countries and the total amount is more than Pakistan had wished for. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has argued that the country needs at least $8 billion (€7.45 billion) over the next three years to repair the huge damage in his country.

Among the benefactors is French President Emmanuel Macron, who spoke at the conference via video and pledged 360 million euros. Pakistan claims it is a victim of climate change, saying months-long floods that left at least two million people homeless and killed 1,700 people last year were caused by global warming.

Disastrous floods

Floods devastated the country from June to October 2022 following unusually heavy monsoon rains and unusually large glacial water masses following a heat wave. According to the Pakistani government, this was due to climate change.

The country, which has been plagued by corruption, nepotism and mismanagement for decades, lacks a sound river control policy, suffers from failures in sewage and sewage systems, and has no plans to curb the unchecked construction of homes along rivers, for example .
