Due to a failure in the Iranian network, less Iranian gas was suddenly sent to Turkey on January 1, 2023, Turkish pipeline operator Botas said in a statement today. The administrator added that the Turkish authorities immediately asked for assistance from Iran.
Turkey has now taken steps to prevent further gas outages in the country now that it is winter and gas from deposits is being used to meet demand.
Second largest supplier
Iran is Turkey’s second largest gas supplier, after Russia. In 2021, the Iranians shipped 9.5 billion cubic meters of gas to Turkey, according to Turkish regulatory data. Salient detail: in January of last year Iran also turned off the gas tap to Turkey, albeit due to a gas leak. However, this had far-reaching consequences: Turkey’s industrial sector ran out of energy.
