Erdogan urges Putin for unilateral truce Related Articles

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, pushed for a unilateral ceasefire that Russia could declare in its war with Ukraine. This would help launch negotiations between the warring parties, although according to the Turkish leader, this also requires a vision of a just solution.

Putin replied, according to the Kremlin, that Russia is willing to talk to Ukraine and wants a serious dialogue. But on condition that the Ukrainian government “give in to the well-known demands of Russia” and take into account the “new territorial situation”.

Donbass, Crimea

Putin refers to the position of Russian speakers in Ukraine, especially in the eastern region of Donbass, where war broke out in 2014. He also annexed large parts of Ukraine, Crimea in 2014 and four regions in eastern and southeastern Ukraine last year. Ukraine will only talk if Russia withdraws from all those regions.

Erdogan maintains good relations with Ukraine and Russia and tries to mediate. Rather, it led to several talks between the warring countries and an agreement that excludes exports of Ukrainian agricultural products via the Black Sea from the war.

Turkey and Russia also maintain close economic ties and Erdogan spoke to his Russian counterpart about it. Just like the fight in Syria where Russia and Turkey support different parties.
