The German was arrested on Wednesday in Berlin. His home and workplace were searched, as were another person’s. Two BND buildings were also searched.
After signals emerged about a spy in our own ranks, according to BND head Bruno Kahl, a large internal investigation was immediately launched. When this confirmed the suspicion, the federal prosecutor was called. “We are working closely and confidently with the investigating authorities to thoroughly clarify the matter,” Kahl said.

Due to the ongoing investigation, no further statements on the case will be released. “Moderation and discretion are very important in this particular case.” With Russia, according to Kahl, we are dealing with a player ‘with whom we have to deal with ruthlessness and readiness for violence’.
The last time a double spy was exposed in the BND was in 2014. He was sentenced to eight years in prison in 2016 for years of espionage, mainly for the US intelligence service CIA.
