“Our military has identified two short-range missiles fired by North Korea,” the South Korean army chief said. “Our military is on full alert and we are working closely with the United States.” The United States and South Korea held a joint air force exercise on Tuesday.
North Korea also launched two ballistic missiles on Sunday. Those shells both ended up in the sea, according to Japan.
North Korea has already launched more than 65 ballistic missiles this year, including an ICBM that the North Koreans say can reach the US mainland. The country continues with missile tests, despite sanctions from the international community.
The United States, Japan and South Korea have warned that tensions on the Korean peninsula will escalate if the North Korean regime carries out a nuclear test. It would be the first in five years and the seventh overall. Washington, Tokyo and Seoul say they will impose tough sanctions if Pyongyang conducts a nuclear test.
