Turkey calls on Syria at the UN

Speaking at the UN Security Council meeting, Turkey’s Permanent Representative to the UN Feridun Sinirlioğlu said that it is critical to continue providing life-saving humanitarian aid due to the prolonging humanitarian crisis and growing needs.

“The cross-border aid mechanism has proven to be a reliable humanitarian hotline for millions of people living in northwestern Syria. Beyond physical assistance, this includes critical support in education, protection, and medical care.” he said she.

Sinirlioğlu indicated that there is no replacement or replacement for the cross-border aid mechanism in terms of scale, scope and effectiveness, saying: “There is no hidden purpose here. The goal is nothing more than saving these lives in need.” he said.

Fergal Mythen, Permanent Representative of Ireland to the UN, speaking on behalf of Norway and Ireland, the sponsors of the bill prepared to renew the aid mechanism in the UN Security Council, also called for all channels of access to be constantly accessible.

Mythen stated that although the number and amount of aid sent to other parts of the country from regime control in Syria has increased, it is still not as effective as cross-border aid. he said.

“NOTHING CAN REPLACE CROSS-BORDER HELP”

US Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Robert Wood said the UN’s cross-border aid mechanism is one of the safest and most transparent operations in the world, adding: “Nothing can replace cross-border aid.” he used his statements.

The UN Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, stated that the socio-economic degradation is the worst since the beginning of the crisis, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the humanitarian mechanism.

Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vassily Nebenzia accused Western countries of politicizing the humanitarian aid mechanism for Syria, noting that “absolutely unacceptable, illegal and one-sided” Western sanctions have affected the lives of ordinary Syrians.

According to the UN, around 15.3 million people (the highest number since the conflict began in 2011) will need protection and humanitarian assistance in 2023.

The long-term support mechanism expires on January 10, 2023.

HELP GOES ONLY TO ONE BORDER GATE

According to the draft resolution adopted by the UN Security Council in 2014, international aid is sent to the northwestern regions of Syria.

The draft resolution, which provides for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the regions controlled by the opposition in Syria through two border gates in Turkey, as well as Iraq and Jordan, was limited in subsequent years over the objections of Russia and China. .

Currently, food and medical aid is delivered to the region only through the Cilvegözü border gate. The UN Security Council agreed to extend the aid program until January 10, 2023.

The extension of the aid program requires the approval of at least 9 members, provided that none of the five permanent members of the Council (Russia, China, the US, France and the UK) oppose it. (AA)
