Iran banned from UN Women’s Rights Commission related articles

Iran is no longer a member of the UN Commission on Women’s Rights due to the brutal crackdown on women-led protests in Tehran and other cities. The US proposal to expel Iran was supported by 29 countries, with eight votes against and 16 abstentions.

Iran would sit on the so-called Commission on the status of women until 2026, but immediately it is no longer part of the body that monitors the international treaty that aims to eliminate discrimination against women. According to the text adopted, the Iranian leadership violates the human rights of women and girls, often using excessive force.

US Vice President Kamala Harris said the US would work with other countries to remove Iran from the committee. Opponents, including Russia and China, have noted that expelling a chosen country would set “a dangerous precedent”.

Mahsa Amini

Iran has been gripped by demonstrations since Masha Amini, a young Kurdish Iranian woman, died in mid-September after being arrested for violating the Islamic-led country’s strict religious dress code. Since then, thousands of arrests have been made. At least 400 people have been sentenced for their involvement in the protests, sometimes to long prison terms. The judiciary handed down 11 death sentences in connection with the protests, two of which were carried out.
