Temporary detention order for 7 days for former President Castillo in Peru
Peru’s supreme judge, Juan Carlos Checkley, said in his statement that Castillo violated the constitutional order and a 7-day temporary detention order was issued.
During the hearing, Deputy Attorney General Marco Huamán affirmed that Castillo had taken refuge in the Mexican Embassy and indicated that there was a “high probability of flight.”
Castillo’s lawyer, Víctor Pérez, and former Prime Minister Aníbal Torres, who attended the online hearing, argued that coercive means were not used against former President Castillo, but rather a clear violation of the law.
Stating that Castillo did not call for an armed uprising in his national speech, Pérez said: “My client’s statements in his message do not constitute a crime of rebellion. How can a person want to escape if he has not committed the crimes for which he is accused? he used the phrase.
In Peru, Vice President Dina Boluarte took office as the country’s new president after Castillo was ousted.
WHAT HAPPENED?
In his address to the nation, Castillo said that Congress is dissolved, that the emergency government will rule the country and that in 9 months a new constitution will be drawn up by holding elections for the new Congress.
Noting that Congress targeted his government, Castillo said: “Congress has destroyed the rule of law and democracy. It has upset the balance of power with the approval of the Constitutional Court to establish a ‘dictatorship of Congress’”. he said.
Following Castillo’s decision, the ministers of Foreign Relations, Economy and Finance, Justice and Human Rights, Labor, Education, Communications and Transportation resigned.
THE ARMY AND THE POLICE WILL COMPLY WITH THE CURRENT CONSTITUTIONAL ORDER
After Castillo’s decision to dissolve Congress and form a national emergency government, the Joint Command of the Armed Forces and the Peruvian National Police indicated that the institutions respect the constitutional order and will not take any measure to the contrary.
By emphasizing that the Armed Forces and the police are united, the statement called on people to remain calm.
CONGRESS WAS DELETED
Castillo was removed by Congress on charges of “permanent moral incompetence,” which he accused of overthrowing the government.
The decision to remove Castillo from his position was adopted in the plenary session with 101 votes in favor, 6 against, and 10 abstentions.
The reason for the dismissal of Castillo in Congress was “trying to usurp public functions, hinder the functioning of the powers of the State and violate the order established by the political constitution.”

TAKEN TO PRISON
Castillo was transferred to the Barbadillo Prison in the Ate district of the capital, Lima, after being put into a car accompanied by police officers.
Castillo is facing five criminal investigations, two of them “for being part of a criminal organization.”
On October 12, the Attorney General’s Office accused Castillo of corruption, for allegedly leading a criminal organization and committing public crimes.
Castillo, who did not accept the accusations against him in his statements at various times, said many times that Congress wanted to carry out a coup against him. (AA)
