Another drone attack on Russian airport Related articles

An oil storage tank has caught fire after a drone strike at an airport in Russia’s Kursk region. So says the governor Roman Starovoyt. This is the third time Russian targets inside Russia have been attacked with drones. “It’s probably about stray munitions, munitions lying around,” says BNR foreign commentator Bernard Hammelburg.

This isn’t the first time the Kursk governor has reported Ukrainian attacks on his region, last week Starovoyt said Ukrainian forces hit a power plant in multiple attacks on the region, resulting in some power outages. By the way, Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for this attack.

According to former military commander Mart de Kruif, the reason Ukraine is attacking Russian fuel depots is that the logistics of the Russians are under great pressure. ‘Both sides are trying this winter – by means of additions and reserves – to prepare again for combat for when the winter passes again. If you attack fuel depots, your tanks will have no fuel to drive. The pressure on logistics increases even more.’

If Ukraine is responsible for the attack, De Kruif thinks it is also a form of self-defense. ‘They’ve actually been doing it for about three or four months. They are very consistent in attacking Russian logistics lines wherever they are. This means that the Russians are struggling logistically to stay operational. In Kherson we saw this to an extreme extent, which is why they had to leave. And we also see that, despite the winter, Ukraine continues to take the initiative to weaken the Russians, so that they have less offensive capability after the winter”.

Air force bases

On Monday, Russia’s Defense Ministry said Ukrainian drones attacked two air bases in Ryazan and Saratov in central Russia. Three soldiers were killed, four were wounded, and two aircraft were damaged. Ukraine has not directly claimed responsibility for the deepest attacks on Russian territory since Moscow invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24.

“That’s ammo lying around,” Hammelburg says. “It’s a kind of drone that can hover very high somewhere in an area for an infinite amount of time, like at an air force base. And if it sees activity there, and it sees it, why are they taking off from there? the Tupolev bombers from which Russia launches missiles at Ukraine, then they strike. And they probably did.’
