UK May Want to Deploy Army Against Strikes Related Articles

The UK government is considering deploying the military to ease the disruption to the public sector caused by strikes. That’s what Conservative Party Chairman Nadhim Zahawi says, writes Bloomberg.

Zahawi makes the statement on British TV show Sophy Ridge on Sky News on Sunday. “If unions aim for a wage increase in line with or even above inflation, inflation will prolong and continue to hit only the most vulnerable,” he said, adding that the war in Ukraine “played a role important” in high inflation. Our message to the unions is clear: this is not the time for a strike. This is the time to negotiate.”

Threat of strike

The UK is facing a period full of strikes, it seems. Workers in public transport, postal services, health care and schools have joined forces in their quest for higher wages and have threatened to lay off their jobs. As a result, the UK is facing a crisis that will significantly affect daily life.

And until there is the prospect of an agreement with the unions, according to Zahawi, an emergency plan must be kept in hand. For example, the possible deployment of military personnel would be examined. “We have the manpower. A few years ago we created a team of specialists for this,’ he said. For example, soldiers could be deployed to drive ambulances, for example. This effort would add to the current package of tasks, without being overlooked. Zahawi: ‘Border security will not be compromised’.
