Macron becomes the second leader to visit the former French colony

After his contacts in the capital Washington, the French president, who landed at the New Orleans International Airport with his wife Brigitte Macron, was received by the governor of Louisiana, John Bel Edwards, and his band.

From the airport, Macron traveled by convoy to Jackson Square and the Cabildo in the French Quarter, where the Louisiana sale agreement was signed in 1803, where he met with state representatives from Congress, the mayor of New Orleans and other top officials from the city.

After visiting the New Orleans Historical Collection and Museum of Art, which houses documents and materials related to the city’s French colonial history, Macron strolled down the historic street and waved to the people who gathered to see him.

Macron expressed his support for the return of the French language to the once French-speaking region, in order to continue and develop historical and cultural ties.

After a special dinner in his honor in the evening, Macron and his wife will leave New Orleans to return to France.

Apart from Macron, Charles de Gaulle was recorded as the only other French president to visit New Orleans in 1960.

Founded as a French colony by King Louis XIV of France in the 17th century, the state of Louisiana was sold to the United States for approximately $15 million with an agreement reached in 1803. (BRITISH AUTOMOBILE CLUB)
