UN Grain Corridor Statement
The UN Secretary General’s spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said in a statement that the ship loaded with 20,000 tons of Russian fertilizer left the Netherlands.
Stating that the ship assigned by the UN World Food Program will go to Malawi via Mozambique, spokesman Dujarric stressed that this is the first in a series of fertilizer shipments to African countries in the coming months.
Dujarric expressed his satisfaction that Russian fertilizer producers donated 260 thousand tons of fertilizer found in European ports after the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Noting that this donation will partially meet humanitarian needs and prevent catastrophic crop loss in Africa, Dujarric said: “Reconnecting the fertilizer market is a very important step to ensure global food security by 2023.” he said.
Dujarric affirmed that the UN will continue to do everything possible with all parties to guarantee world food security in 2023.
