The anti-fraud service OLAF has launched an investigation, the service confirms. Employees of the EUAA, which is supposed to help EU countries welcome asylum seekers, insisted on this.
Long list of abuses
In a letter to OLAF, the European Commission and the European Parliament two months ago, staff listed a long list of abuses to the EUAA. And this while the director Nina Gregori was appointed three years ago to clean up. Her predecessor had to resign because he allegedly misbehaved towards his subordinates.
Gregori interprets the good weather with the help of a circle of confidants, the letter’s authors say. Internal control and security measures have been disabled or have been manipulated. Meanwhile, he offers his allies promotions and other favors. Before him his “chief of cabinet”. Colleagues accused him of transgressive behavior, but the director kept him safe.
According to the Malta-based EUAA, the allegations are false. The service says it has confidence in the outcome of the investigation. OLAF investigations had previously led to the downfall of the head of the EU border and coast guard Frontex.
