On social media, there were images of some groups taking to the streets after Iran’s 1-0 defeat by the United States at the World Cup in Qatar, celebrating the defeat by chanting slogans and setting off fireworks. In the images, opposition groups took to the streets of many cities in the country such as Tehran, Gurve, Resht, Gorgan, Cevanrud, Ardebil, Urmiye, Senendec, Merivan, Dezful, Ahvaz, Zencan, Mahabad, Sakkız and Kamyaran, they showed their joy. .
In the footage, there are moments when Iranians celebrate by chanting slogans, shooting off fireworks and forming convoys of vehicles. As audiences watching the match in conference halls, cinemas and cafes in the capital Tehran sadly returned home, preparations for possible victory celebrations were cancelled.
The protesters, who protested after the death of Mahsa Amini after being arrested in Iran, called for a boycott of Iran’s 2022 FIFA World Cup matches and demanded that the matches not be shown. Calls not to show joy in case Iran wins were met in many places.
