Poor Cuba seeks support from old allies Related articles

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel is traveling the world seeking support from old political and ideological allies. After a visit to Algeria, the Cuban leader will also visit Russia, Turkey and China.

Cuba’s already faltering economy has faced major setbacks since the start of the corona pandemic. Not only has tourism virtually stopped, the devastating Hurricane Ian has caused widespread power outages and supplies have become tight in many parts of the country.

The trip is therefore generally seen as a mission to restore economic and political ties with old partners to “continue to promote the country’s development,” says President Díaz-Canel. “In other words, continue to build the horizon of well-being that we deserve”.

For example, China, one of Cuba’s largest trading partners and also one of its largest creditors, has indicated that it wants to support the country again. “We will do our best to help Cuba,” a Chinese government spokesman said. The Cuban president is expected to receive a significant amount of cash, loans and other supplies. In 2011, China already forgave the country six billion dollars as part of a major restructuring.

From Putin to Fidel

For the visit to Beijing, Diaz-Canel will go to Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dimitri Peskov said Cuba was “a very important partner” for Russia with “a lot to discuss”. In addition to the conversation with Putin, Díaz-Canel will also be present at the unveiling of a monument to former Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

During an early stop on his tour in Algeria, Diaz-Canel made arrangements for the fuel to be delivered to Cuba. The country is also donating a solar power plant to Cuba to help the country with its growing energy shortage.
