Chief Justice Roberts, fix the mess in your court before voters force Congress to do it
letters to the editor

About the publisher: I am appalled at the corruption and blatant disregard for ethical standards by members of the United States Supreme Court, especially Judge Clarence Thomas. I will not list the scandals that everyone knows. Luxury travel with a GOP billionaire is just the latest example of the ultra-rich entitlements gaining access and potentially influencing Thomas and others. It’s despicable.
Americans no longer trust the Supreme Court. We don’t think it’s impartial. We don’t think it’s apolitical. We don’t think it’s fair. How incredibly sad.
Many are calling on Congress to pass a code of ethics for the Supreme Court, but unfortunately Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) has been selected to lead Chief Justice G. Roberts Jr. to follow. asked to take on this task. I have absolutely no confidence that Roberts is going to do it.
I appeal to the Chief Justice to do something about the mess in his court. Otherwise, the voters won’t stop until Congress does.

About the publisher: It should be no secret why there is such a lack of accountability in our society today. Even a casual TV or radio listener is instructed by the ads never to acknowledge your transgressions. They go something like this:
“Are you a serial drinker who was finally caught endangering everyone on the street? Don’t get up to take your punishment, call me and I’ll get you out of here.
“Borrowed too much money? Call my company and we will deal with the bank that lent you the money and simply expects you to pay it back.”
“Did you cheat the IRS? Call us and we will ensure that you never have to meet your social obligations again.”
There’s no secret here. Every day we are told that we don’t have to live an honorable life. There is always someone willing to relieve you of your obligations against payment. And they expect to be paid in full.

About the editor: Anyone hoping for an impeachment against Thomas will wait forever while the House of Representatives is in Republican hands.
But if the scandal in question had been perpetrated by one of the more liberal judges, does anyone doubt that the same suit would have been brought immediately? Just ask.
