Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a cautionary tale for Senator Diane Feinstein

letters to the editor

April 15, 2023

About the editor: Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) must carefully consider the legacy of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg before deciding to stay in office despite her significant health problems.

While Ginsburg remained bright and attentive throughout her on-field service, not only was she the oldest person to serve on the field as of 2010, she also had multiple cancer recurrences. Despite this, she kept her position at a time when a Democratic president and senate could have ensured that her legal philosophy continued on the bench.

When she died just before the 2020 election, then-President Trump named an individual whose disinterest in the impact her decisions had on the lives of ordinary women could not have been more opposed to Ginsburg’s life’s work.

The future is unpredictable; Decisions affecting the nation as a whole should be made based on an analysis of the current political situation, not personal wishes.

Stephanie Scher, Los Angeles

..

About the editor: I disagree politically with Feinstein, but the calls for his resignation seem premature and unfair. It resembles the way former Supreme Court justice Stephen Breyer was treated after Joe Biden became president.

If someone needs to be pressured to resign, how about sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.)?

Greg Scott, Los Angeles

..

About the editor: Feinstein must now resign. We are in an ongoing battle to uphold democracy, justice, the environment and women’s rights, and we need all hands on deck.

I don’t blame her. I blame those around her who empower her, cover up her weaknesses, write her tweets and statements, and keep the clock ticking until she finally retires. I suppose there are a handful of unknown associates who currently have an astonishing amount of power and influence and are ashamed not to give it up.

I weep for a pioneer in California who was made fun of by those who claim to support her.

Caroline Greeven, Ventura..

About the editor: I am writing this as someone with a loved one in their family who suffers from dementia.

Feinstein has been showing clear signs of cognitive decline for some time, most recently when she was unaware that her own staff released a statement that she would not be seeking re-election.

Feinstein has had a successful political career, but due to her health problems, Californians in the Senate are only effectively represented by Democrat Alex Padilla. By allocating two senators per state, regardless of population, Californians’ already diminished voting rights in the Senate were cut in half.

It’s time for the senator to gracefully step aside and let the Californians have two senators speak and vote for us.

It’s not sexist. It’s not heartless. It puts the needs and interests of Californians first.
