Tennessee Republican antics might be coming to a school board or city council near you

letters to the editor

April 7, 2023

About the editor: While the eviction of two members of the Tennessee statehouse may seem a far cry from California, we should pay close attention.

Republicans in Tennessee have found another method of gerrymandering: expel the congressmen they don’t like through a twisted application of their codes of conduct. Three duly elected MPs who are members of the Democratic Party were removed specifically for peacefully protesting the House’s sensible gun laws, and two were even impeached.

The tens of thousands of voters in these two districts were effectively disenfranchised, not because of an election, but after an administrative charade by petty rulers.

What is happening in your legislature? blackboard? Local council? Supervisory Board?

Jeanne Brown, San Juan Capistrano

..

About the editor: Perhaps a response to gun violence would be not just to disgrace Tennessee, but to avoid it.

Major companies headquartered in Tennessee are FedEx (which I will never use again) and Dollar General (you won’t see me in their stores).

By doing research, we can all know where our dollars are going. I will tell everyone I see about these companies and discourage all travelers from planning trips to Tennessee.

Sorry Nashville, but your joy and beauty are no match for your state’s ugly representation.

Janice Tully, Seal Beach.

About the editor: When I heard about the evictions, I wondered if I still lived in a democracy.

Three Democratic state officials joined a gun control protest following a shooting at a Nashville school, and Republican state Representative Gino Bulso is said to have said the three “basically staged a mutiny.”

A mutiny is what happened on January 6, 2021. A peaceful protest for gun control is hardly equal.

What does it say about our democracy that two out of three have been suspended from their seats for participating in this protest? Is it safe to ask more questions or act on your beliefs in our country?

There is clearly confusion here and lines need to be drawn. Participating in a protest is not the same as committing sexual misconduct or misusing public funds. What did those who voted to remove think?

It is especially painful to see t

o Silent African-American legislators. What haven’t we learned? What are we doomed to repeat?

S. A. Epstein, Glendale..

About the editor: Justin Jones and Justin Pearson were making “good trouble”. The late John Lewis would be proud.

Maria Alicia Martinez, San Pedro..

About the editor: Loud noise in the living room is a crime and not tolerated in Tennessee.

But shoot three school

Kids and three dead employees appear to be okay as the Tennessee Republican legislature won’t do anything about it.
