Leader, stop what you’re doing and ban assault weapons now
letters to the editor

About the editor: I want something very simple. I want President Biden to declare that he will not sign any new bill passed by Congress, however valid, until a bill banning assault weapons reaches his desk. (“Police Seek Motive as Nashville Shooting Draws Attention of Divided Nation,” March 27)
I want the federal government to remain paralyzed until this bill is passed.
I want something different I want legislators representing states where mass infanticides have occurred, and where there are many, to meet the parents of those murdered children and explain to them publicly why they could not support such a law.
James Steimke, Palm Desert

About the editor: The tragic mass murder at a Nashville elementary school that killed three children, three adults, and the gunman was chilling.
But the National Rifle Assn., the gun manufacturers, and the members of Congress who support them (and are supported by them) can rest assured that at least no one has lost their 2nd Amendment rights.
And by the way, what well-regulated militia did the shooter belong to?
Ellen Button, Tustin

About the editor: Nicole Hester of Tennessee’s photo of a crying child on a school bus should be enlarged into a poster and displayed prominently and continuously in the halls of Congress until significant gun control measures are enacted.
The Times said a thousand words to them in this photo they published.
Karen Scott Browdy, Fillmore.
About the editor: Another unthinkable gun atrocity. So back to America’s exercise after the carnage:
Mourning the innocent dead. Shower your survivors with thoughts and prayers. Emphasize Sagittarius’s manic tendencies. Angry those who may have dissuaded him or her from such a murderous path.
And watch the NRA’s political mushrooms cringe at questions about the ease of acquiring offensive weapons.
After the dead are buried, life goes on. Firearm sales increased. Animated second amendment debates recycled. Politicians are hesitant about meaningful gun control measures. Not much changes.
So the Americans just scrounge on until the next gun battle breathes new life into this sad practice. Pete Seeger’s iconic lament comes to mind, “When will they ever learn?”
Greg Gilbert, Burney, California…
About the editor: Motive? There’s really only one type of shooter, a person with some kind of emotional disorder, lots of guns, and a grudge. I’m sure a specific complaint from the Nashville shooter will surface that will mean little to the victims let alone the dead.
The problem is the attitude, that is the way to solve your problems
the on
kill you and take a lot of people with you. The NRA also has an attitude problem, they only have a hammer, so every problem looks like a nail.
The NRA can do a lot of good if it works to change attitudes. It is able to be heard and thus save lives.
We all have an attitude problem. We see shooters as a kind of aliens. Unfortunately they are ours. Perhaps a little more civility and compassion in our discourse won’t kill us, it might even save your life.
Peter Scofield, Corona del Mar
