Why must LAUSD workers continue to take extreme measures for a fair wage?

letters to the editor

About the editor: My kids are in Los Angeles Unified School District and we just had another educational break. I absolutely supported the district workers who went on strike, but I am saddened and frustrated that it has come to that again. (“LAUSD and Union Workers Leading Mass Strikes Reach Tentative Agreement,” March 24)

Why would our government officials do this for such basic requests? Everyone deserves a living wage, and those who provide essential services in our public schools deserve even more.

I know this is a local matter but I think it goes beyond that. Gov. Gavin Newsom should increase spending per student in California, which is so wealthy.

I’ve heard that a budget is a moral document, it shows our priorities as a society. Let’s spend more on sending a kid to school than putting someone in jail. And let’s make sure spending per student isn’t tied to classroom, punitive, and unfair attendance levels.

About the editor: It was nice to read that the underpaid support staff at LAUSD is getting a long overdue raise.

Carvalho, who once warned that union demands could push the district to the brink of bankruptcy, now says “the deal was structured to disrupt spending and make it affordable,” according to your report.

If one initially assumes that this statement is correct, the question arises: where does this money actually come from, and why was it not done years ago to help the hard-working helpers if the resources were available?
