Letters to the editor: Trump can be impeached. Where are the Law and Order Republicans?

About the editor: I don’t understand the planned protests in favor of former President Trump or the Republican opposition to a possible impeachment trial in New York State. (“Trump says he will be arrested Tuesday, encourages supporters to protest,” March 18)

Since all of the apparently illegal activity took place before, during, and after Trump’s presidency, many Republicans warned us not to judge too quickly and instead let the process run. If crimes are committed, they are punished, we are told.

The process, albeit slowly, is taking place. Where are the Republicans to defend them?

About the editor: House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) is not stupid. He knows that what he has said about Trump’s legal troubles is a lie. And he knows that these lies endanger the security of our country and its legal institutions.

He only tells these lies to maintain his own personal power. That makes him the definition of a traitor.

About the publisher: Nearly 50 years ago, another president was prosecuted. But Richard Nixon found a way out.

After Nixon resigned in August 1974 over his involvement in the Watergate crimes, there was speculation about his inevitable impeachment. Vice President Gerald Ford succeeded him and a month later granted Nixon a full pardon.

Two months after the 2020 election, President Trump could have chosen to follow Nixon’s lead by stepping down and having Vice President Mike Pence pardon him for possible federal crimes. But no, Trump’s narcissism dominated; He fantasized about “stolen elections” culminating in the January 6 riot.

When Trump-inspired insurgents chanted “Hang Mike Pence,” a pardon was off the table that exposed him to both federal and state prosecutions. Too bad Trump didn’t learn from history.
