About the editor: The Times does not explain why and how student loan debt has been impacted by the pandemic. Has it suddenly increased? NO. Have students lost their grades and job prospects? NO. There is no legitimate reason to believe that the average student has suffered as much as the average worker.

About the publisher: So if I understand Judge Neil M. Gorsuch correctly, if the rich and middle class can pay their loans, then the poor can be expected to do the same – after all, don’t the banks deserve what they are entitled to? Never mind that the federal government bailed out the banks not too long ago. If the loans are forgiven, won’t that money be spent on the market where it would help the economy more than the banks currently do?

About the publisher: The Supreme Court decision on student debt forgiveness in this case requires status and a legal act authorizing such forgiveness, not an emotional outburst from those seeking relief, no matter how harrowing their stories. Standing is problematic here, as is the authority of the HERO Act in this context. These are the only questions for our nine wise judges to judge.

About the editor: While student debt forgiveness is absolutely necessary to address the systemic inequalities of our higher education system, another component that continues to ruin the lives of student loan borrowers is the unique destruction of the constitutional right to bankrupt student loan debt. Unless these rights are entirely traced back to student loan debt, the lending industry will continue to operate in bad faith, charging usurious interest rates and all but ensuring that principal balances are never repaid and the middle and working class remain forever trapped . Cycles of predatory debt.

About the editor: Why should I, who pays my taxes, be forced to pay for another who does not keep his word? Student loans are a commitment by the student to help them get through college and then pay back what they have borrowed. Times may be difficult now and deferral of repayment may be appropriate, but cancellation of such debt is not. Refunds in other forms are accepted, but no cancellation.

About the publisher: Conservative judges suggested Biden overstepped his authority and questioned the fairness of Biden’s plan to cancel student loans for millions of people drowning in debt. They conveniently and deliberately forgot the word “fairness” coming from this largely Trump-appointed Supreme Court when they ruled that Roe v. Wade would be overthrown.
Judges struck down a solid 50-year-old law declaring that women have no rights when it comes to making health and personal decisions about their own lives and bodies. The specific standards of fairness and “fairness” they claim to carefully balance are unbalanced and in dire need of reassessment.
