The involved clubs did not provide any information about the cost of the transfer. Christian Fassnacht was no longer with Bern for Young Boys’ season opener against Lausanne-Sport on Sunday. YB already then reported that he was released by “the management of the club for contract negotiations abroad.”
Fassnacht joined Young Boys from Thun in 2017, became a member of the national team and is popular with fans. In total, the 19-time national team player made 217 appearances in the Super League (of which 182 for the UB) and scored 68 goals and provided 41 assists. He won the championship with YB five times and the cup twice. His wealth of experience also includes nine Champions League appearances.
The 29-year-old has made the most appearances for YB in Bern’s current squad. “Fassnacht is leaving YB as a legend and will always have a place of honor in the history books of the club,” BSC Young Boys said in a statement. In the 125-year history of Young Boys, besides Fassnacht, only two players managed to win five league titles: David von Ballmus and Jean-Pierre Nsama.
“It suits us, it suits him,” YB Athletic Director Steve Von Bergen said ahead of the completion report. In Norwich, Fassnacht meets former YB coach David Wagner, who has been there since January. He will become the fourth Swiss player after Gaetano Jallants, Josip Drmic and Timm Klose to play for the Canaries.
