St. Gallen has become active again in the transfer market. The Espen have signed midfielder Richard van der Venn from Australia’s Melbourne City. The club announced this on Thursday evening. The Dutchman, who won the championship with Melbourne in Australia, signed a two-year contract with St. Gallen.
The 31-year-old learned to play football in the Netherlands. Van der Venne made 136 appearances over five seasons in the Dutch second highest league for Top Oss and Go Ahead Eagles Deventer. In those games, he has 39 goals and 20 assists. In January 2020, van der Venne made his debut for RKC Waalwijk in the Dutch top flight, scoring nine goals and seven assists in 58 Eredivisie appearances. Last summer he decided to jump to Australia. In Melbourne, he scored seven times and provided five assists.
Head of Sports Alain Sutter is pleased with van der Venne’s skills: “Richard brings a lot of experience to our team. He has not only demonstrated his scoring qualities, but also showed that he can make a name for himself in different leagues.”
