Jailed for assault on Quincy Promes
Dutch footballer Quincy Promes was found guilty of assault by a Dutch court and sentenced to 18 months in prison.
The 31-year-old footballer was charged with attempted murder and manslaughter for stabbing his cousin in the knee during an argument in 2020. Promes has denied the charges, but Dutch prosecutors believe there is insufficient evidence against him and they say he should be sentenced to prison.
The 50-time national striker was not in his hometown at the time of the decision and it is unclear when he will return. Promes currently resides in Russia because he has a contract with Spartak Moscow.
He was sentenced to prison as a result of the testimony of two eyewitnesses and the discovery of conversations on his phone. Promes, who previously played for Ajax and Seville, was also sentenced to pay 7,000 euros to the victim.
The court said that if Promes had attended the hearing and shown any remorse, his sentence would have been lighter. -approximately six months less in jail- fixed.
Memphis Depay and Quincy Promes are on the Dutch National Team.
THE DRUG CASE CONTINUES
Promes will be able to appeal against the decision. In addition, he is expected to be tried again shortly for his alleged involvement in drug trafficking.
Due to allegations of drug trafficking, Promes will be arrested if he sets foot in any country that has an extradition treaty with the Netherlands. Due to the conflict in Ukraine, Russian clubs are currently banned from playing in UEFA European competitions.
QUINCY PROMES CAREER
The Amsterdam-born striker has played 50 times for the Netherlands national team and has scored seven goals. Beginning his career in Twente, Promes spent four years with Spartak between 2014 and 2018, then signed with Spanish club Sevilla. From there, he returned to Spartak after spending a season and a half at Ajax. In his second term, he scored 37 goals in 74 games for the club.
