It was Kasim Adams of all who figured it out in the 98th minute. He scored with a header to make it 2-1 to Basel. Thus, the defender more than corrected the mistake that left him behind in the 10th minute.
Nice then threw everything forward again, but the southern French were unable to level the score. They came closest in the 108th minute when a free kick hit the crossbar. As a result, the Basal team was celebrating, which, ten years after reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League, again managed to accomplish a European feat.
For a long time there was little to indicate this. As in the second leg of the 1/8 finals in Bratislava, FCB were overwhelmed by the opponent’s pace at the beginning of the game. In addition, the French were able to put pressure on Basel at the beginning of the game in the swing and provoke mistakes.
Less than ten minutes later, Adams, who scored a goal, was surprised by an opponent lurking behind him and allowed the ball to be taken from the edge of his own penalty area. It eventually ended with Gaetan Laborde, whose shot was lightly but decisively parried. Marvin Hitz didn’t stand a chance.
There has been no response from guests yet. Nice controlled the game and allowed Baszler to run with the changeover. When the ball was in possession for a long time, the guests usually seemed unimaginative. There was a lack of punching power in the outer lanes and accuracy in the center. Only once did the fans at the Stade de Nice take their breath away: in the 28th minute, Zeki Amdouni shot from an acute angle, and the ball swept past Andi Zekiri, who had only to remove his foot.
Even in the second half, it was not clear for a long time whether Basel should score at least one goal. The attacking department has already fully signed the midfield, and the attackers from Nice at least inflicted a few pinpricks. However, coach Heiko Vogel waited until the 72nd minute before making the first changes. He invited Riccardo Calafiori and Jean-Kevin Augustin, proving that he has a golden flair.
A good quarter of an hour later, Calafiori led Augustin, who almost out of nowhere scored a goal to make it 1-1 and put Basel back in the game. In the euphoria of the goal, Basel nearly made it 2-1 four minutes later. However, Zeki Amdouni’s finish hit the post.
A flaw that no one else bothered in the end. In the semi-finals, there will be a duel with Fiorentina and the former favorite of the public, Artur Cabral. Basel will play away only on May 11, May 18 the second leg will take place in St. Jakob-Park.
